* swipe = (디지털 기기에서) 스와이프 하다,카드를 대다, 훔치다, 비난하다

* swipe sth from N = N의 sth을 훔치다.

 

Assistant: Maybe that was your dad teaching you a lesson.

= 아마도 그건 그쪽한테 교훈을 주기 위한 그쪽 아빠겠네요

* N –ing = -하려는 N

 

Phil: Ahaha. Zinger.

= 아하하, 재치 있는 대답이네요.

* zinger = 재치있는 대답

 

So… any chance I could get a break on this one?

= 그래서 이거에 대해서 좀 참작할 수 있을까요?

* get a break = Obtain a favorable opportunity; get special consideration or treatment. = 우대적인 기회를 얻다, 특별 대우나 고려등을 받다.

* get a break on N = N에 대해서 특별 대우를 받다.

 

Assistant: I can throw in a bell- = 종은 서비스로 드릴 수 있어요

* throw in N = include sth free with a purchase = N을 구매할 때 서비스로 주다.

 

Phil: Deal!

= 거래 성사! 좋아요!

 

Assistant: -for five dollars.

= 5달러예요달러에요

 

Phil: No, sir.

= 괜찮아요

 

Assistant: So you wanna go for the insurance this time or is it still for suckers?

= 그래서 이번에는 보험 드실 건가요?? 아니면 여전히 그건 머저리들이나 하는 건가요?

* this time = 이번에는

* go for the insurance = 보험에 들다

* sucker = 바보, 머저리

 

Phil: Hahaha. Caught me again. Well played, m’ lord. I will take some insurance, thank you.

= 하하하, 저를 또 붙잡으시네요. 좋은 흐름이었습니다, 주인님. 보험 들게요.

* m’lord = my lord = 주인님

* take insurance = 보험에 들다

 

Scene: Pritchett household

Gloria: What’s going on in there?

= 그 안에 무슨 일이야?

 

Manny: That’s not step four.

= 그건 4단계가 아니에요

 

Jay: Don’t worry about it.

= 그건 걱정하지 마라

 

Manny: Well, it says right here that-

= 바로 여기에 적힌 바로는..

* it says that~ = that이하라고 적혀있다.

 

Jay: Hush; you’re worrying about it.

= 너 그거 걱정하고 있구나

 

Gloria: I thought you guys might need a drink.

= 둘 다 마실거리가 필요할 거 같아서..

 

Jay: Uh, you have no idea.

= 자긴 모를 거야.

* you have no idea = 너는 모를 거야. 너는 짐작도 못 할 거야. 너는 상상도 못할 거야.

 

Gloria: Manny, mi amor, I have to go get some stuff for our trip.

= 매니, 내 사랑. 나는 가서 우리 여행 짐 좀 싸야겠다

* get some stuff for N = N을 위해 짐을 좀 싸다.

 

have some fun with your father, okay?

= 아빠랑 즐거운 시간 보내라, 알겠지?

 

I’ll see you Monday. It makes me so happy to see my two boys working together.

= 월요일에 보자. 두 남자가 같이 일하는 거 보니 행복하네.

 

Manny: Jay shocked himself twice.

= 새아빠 두 번이나 감전당했어요

* shock oneself = 감전당하다.

 

Jay: Okay, Manny.

 

Manny: Well, I warned him.

= 음, 저는 아빠한테 경고했어요

 

Jay: Yep, he’s been a big help.

= 그래, 정말 큰 도움이 되더라

 

Gloria: Look at you two with your private jokes already.

= 벌ㅆ 두 사람 사이에 사적인 농담이 생긴 거 봐봐!

 

You’re a regular Salazar and El Oso.

= 완전 살라자르와 엘오소네요.

 

(Commentary)

 

Gloria: It’s a very big comedy to me in Colombia.

= 콜롬비아에서 그건 저한테 엄청난 코미디였어요

 

El Oso is always hit Salazar in the head with the ladder and things,

= 엘오소가 항상 살라자르 머리를 사다리나 그런 걸로 치면

* hit sb in 신체부위 with N = N으로 sb의 신체부위를 치다.

 

and sometimes they wore dresses.

= 그리고 때때로 드레스를 입기도 해요

 

They make you laugh, but they also make you think.

= 그 사람들이 여러분 웃게 만들지만, 또 여러분들이 생각하게 만들기도 하죠

 

 

Scene: Dunphy household

(Phil leaves bicycle at bottom of stairs)

(필은 계단 아래쪽에 자전거를 놔둔다)

 

Phil: You blew it. You made me look bad.

네가 그걸 날려버렸어. 너가 나를 곤란하게 만들었어.

* look bad = stupid, embarrassing 하게 만들다.

 

No, you made your mother and I look bad.

= 아니지, 네가 엄마랑 나를 곤란하게 만들었어

 

We’re a team. (knocks on Luke’s door)

= 우린 팀이야 (루크 방을 두드린다)

* knock on N = N을 두드리다, 노크하다

 

Luke, you in there?

= 루크, 너 안에 있어?

* in there = 그 안에

 

Luke: Hey, dad.

= 아빠

 

Phil:

That was, uh… that was pretty fun today, huh?

= 오늘 꽤나 재밌는 날이었어, 그지?

 

Getting your new bike?

= 새 자전거도 받고?

 

Luke: Yeah, it was awesome.

= 네, 너무 멋진 날이었어..

 

Phil: So, uh, what happened after I took off?

= 그래서, 내가 가고 난 뒤에 무슨 일 있었니?

* what happened ~? = 무슨 일 있었니?

 

Anything you wanna… share with me?

= 나한테 말하고 싶은 거 없어?

* share with sb = sb에게 털어놓다, 말하다.

 

Luke: Not really.

= 별로요

* not really = 별로

 

Phil: So… if I went out to the garage to take a picture for a scrapbook, there’d be no surprises?

= 그럼, 만일 내가 차고에 가서 스크랩북에 붙일 사진 찍어도 놀랄 일 없고?

* go out to N = N으로 나가다.

* no surprises = 놀라일 없음.

 

Luke: …I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean it. I just made a mistake!

= 정말 죄송해요! 그러려던 건 아니에요! 단지 실수였어요!

 

Phil: Yeah, a big mistake! You’re making me look really bad here;

= 그래, 큰 실수야! 너는 아빠를 아주 창피하게 만들었어

 

I told mom you were ready for this.

= 나는 엄마한테 네가 준비됐다고 얘기했는데..

 

Luke: It’s just a scratch, dad.

= 그냥 긁힌 건데요, 아빠.

* a scratch = 긁힘

 

Phil: That’s not the point, Luke- what?

= 그게 중요한 게 아니잖아, 루크.. 뭐라고?

 

Luke: I scratched it on my way into the driveway. I’m sorry.

= 제가 그걸 차고로 들어오는 길에 긁었어요. 죄송해요.

* on one’s way (to N) = one이 (N으로) 가던 길에

* the driveway = 미국 자기 집 차고 진입로

 

Phil: So… it’s not stolen?

= 그럼, 도둑맞은 게 아니고?

* be stolen = 도둑맞다

 

Luke: …No. Why?

= 아니에요. 왜요?

 

Phil: That’s good…

= 좋네..

 

’cause… there are bad people out there who would steal a bike.

= 왜냐하면 저기 밖에는 자전거 훔치는 나쁜 사람들이 있거든..

* out there = 저기 바깥에

* up there = 거기 위쪽에

* down there = 거기 아래쪽에

 

Those are thieves. (walks out)

= 그 사람들은 도둑들이지. (걸어 나간다)

 

You sit there and think about the scratch part;

= 거기 앉아서 긁은 거에 대해서 생각해 봐

 

that’s not good either – gotta fix that step –

= 그것도 좋진 않아. 저 계단 좀 고쳐야겠다.

* gotta = got to = have got to = ~해야겠다
